If there is one space where we can comfortably and freely display our emotions and find release from daily tensions, it is certainly within the cozy confines of our home. Julian Zigerli’s A/W 13/14 collection “Happy Tears” is the intersection between these antithetical notions of constriction and release, inspired by the feelings that come out when we arrive home to our daily reprieve shielding us from external demands.
Prints assembled from images of magnetized iron powder and veins simulated by ink manipulations capture Zigerli’s image of our inner channels, conduits to the electric impulses that make up emotional and visceral experiences-among them, tears of joy. The collection’s color palette is dispensed into two categories: sober/controlled and bright/bold, a conscious contrast between a guarded exterior and a more colorful interior.
One of the drawing components of Zigerli’s design is his incorporation of innovative Swiss textiles into wearable garments. As inviting as the results may be, Zigerli’s prints have always been the highlight of his collections for me. His affinity for capturing seemingly organic patterns and reproducing them on a larger scale is arguably the most compelling element of his work.
