Near-levelled during the Second World War, mercilessly industrialised under the GDR and currently serving as a focal point of the capital’s contemporary art community, Mitte’s Auguststraße offers a microcosmic reflection of its host city’s story like no other location. In this editorial, photographer Julia Zierer and stylist Julia Heifer weave a visual narrative of grit, refined kitsch and dusty nostalgia, pinning down the quintessence of both the street and the wider city it has come to represent.
