Frank Salewski, an MA student in fashion design at Weißensee School of Art & Design, has already garnered much attention for his highly conceptual design, experimenting heavily with form, material and shape.
His last collection “Serengeti darf nicht sterben” names after the 1959 documentary by Bernhard Grzimek, draws many influences from this exotic location, using a muted colour palette of beige, cream and orange, to create a distinctly warm aesthetic. Likewise, he experiments with the form and structure of his clothes, eschewing typical western cuts for tribal inspired garments. With three quarter length pleated trousers, overlaid shorts and under-trousers, layered capes, and shawl tops, his experimentation with form is clear to see.
Likewise, his use of material and shape is particularly individual. Combining very loosely knit woollen garments, tribal die, faux-hair accessories, and mesh hessian, he creates a distinctly tactile collection. However what particularly stands out is his use of detailing and accessories, adding beaded necklaces, circular beaded cut-outs on his tops, and even beaded mouth-pieces, to add something slightly grotesque, even animalistic to his collection.
His work has even been featured in the Œ Magazine issue 6 editorial “Carpet Burn,” shot by widely acclaimed photographer and film director Matt Lambert, who has gained much attention for his social subversive documentary shorts and photography, dealing with the sexuality of contemporary youth.
What remains conceptual at this point, offers much to look forward to in the coming seasons, with his brave and original experimentation with form structure and material; a rare talent!
