Everywhere we turn these days, it seems a new cafe or bar crops up. Berliners love to languish at their local hangouts and lucky for us, Type Hype — a premium mixture of great coffee, typography products, and slow food– has set up shop in the heart of Mitte. Conceived by the the founders of Strichpunkt, one of Germany’s most well known design agencies, Type Hype is an ode to letter lovers. Paper goods, home accents, accessories, and food products enhanced with specially designed typefaces fill up ceiling-high shelves around the cafe, which serves fresh bread, organic milk, delicious juices and specialty coffee from Brandenburg on a daily basis. Industrial lamps hang from above and an old Korrex proofing press sit alongside old printing workshop memorabilia, creating a charming environment to sip, gather, work, or browse. This winsome new space is situated next to the glitzy Lux Eleven Hotel on Rosa-Luxembourg Strasse and thus occasionally welcomes celebrities who are passing through town (I encountered Rupert Friend browsing for gifts while having his breakfast on my last outing to the shop). The next time you’re in the district for some retail therapy, I strongly suggest you stop by, sit down and eat your way through the alphabet!
