Singer T’Neeya

By

The music meets style series explore the symbiotic relationship between music and style. Growing up as a child in Nigeria, I was deeply fascinated by the lyrical and visual mastery of musicians like Elvis Presley, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Prince, Deborah Harry, David Bowie and Madonna to name but a few. Reason being, these artists managed to effortlessly straddle the two worlds of music and fashion in a way that made them pioneers in both fields.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Berlin-based emerging musician T’Neeya in a concert recently. Her live performance was the highlight of my evening; her voice dripped like warm golden honey on a hot summer day and spread its sweetness seductively over the audience.

I later learnt that the chanteuse grew up in Cameroon and it was experiencing solitude in a Catholic boarding school that drove her to express herself by writing, singing and performing her songs. Currently, T’Neeya is in the process of putting her first album together and describes her music as ‘Afro Pop Soul’. Not only does she sing like a dream,‘She’s Got The Look’ (borrowing the words from a classic Prince track).
