Discovering a new Berlin bag or shoe label fills me with such grand excitement these days. I’ve found it to be an increasing challenge to diversify the bag and shoe credits when styling an editorial and with an Œ editorial shooting planned for September, I was delighted to come across Alpha Cruxis —a Berlin-based label by designer Rebecca Martin producing sculptural bags and clutches made from beautiful Italian vegetable tanned leather.
Rebecca is a graduate of the Royal Melbourne University of Technology, where she graduated in 2010 in honors in fashion design. After interning at Barbara i Gongini, she settled in Berlin and promptly launched her label, bringing traditional leather craft work to create sturdy, simple, yet exquisite bags.
Last week, the designer invited me to her studio where she led me through her production process and showed me the labor intensive goods from her debut collection “Geometry”. I was thoroughly impressed by the heavy duty leather material from which Rebecca crafts her creations with splendid precision. And for the lucky lady who gets a hold of an Alpha Cruxis bag, I can assure you that it is built to endure the stress and strains we all inevitably put our bags through.
Welcome to the Berlin fashion family, Alpha Cruxis! Oh, how we really needed you!
