Don’t play with your food! Or so we were told as children. The Japanese, however, have a different take on this. The art of Bento lunch box arrangement can easily turn into a tetris game and this week, we’re excited about The Bento Lunch Book, an illustrated cookbook by Cam Tu Nguyen that delves into this special Japanese lunch making practice. In 2013, Washoku, the traditional dietary culture of the Japanese, was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. The practice dictates that one proper meal has to contain at least 5 different colors, 5 different tastes and 5 different preparation methods, resulting in a tasty, well-balanced, and beautifully arranged daily fare.
