CTM 2016

With the falling of each February comes the opening of CTM, the “festival of adventurous music and art” now in its 17th year. Taking up residence in some of the city’s most respected creative locations, Hebbel Am Ufer, Kraftwerk and, the festival’s night-time nucleus, Berghain among them, the week offers a healthy spread of those at the cutting edge of the contemporary digital art and music scenes, to which Berlin is a proud home.

Though the festivities may have already kicked off, and suitably in style with an opening party at Panorama Bar with Berlin mainstay Rødhåd, Giegling affiliate ATEQ and the frequent soundtracker of Gosha Rubchinsky’s Paris presentations, Buttechno, we would argue that the best is yet to come. Today, for example, sees the opening of ‘Deep Web’, an “audiovisual installation created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer [&] musician Robert Henke. Offering a “ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound” within the cavernous austerity of former power plant Kraftwerk, “immersive” an experience it will no doubt be.Hatsune mikuLaTurbo Avedon / Crypton Future Media Inc. 2007

Deep Web is but one of series of installations, exhibitions and talks taking place over the week, with others certainly worthy of perusal including ‘Rituals’ at HAU2, an installation by Paris-based Vincent Moon, discussion panels at Red Bull Studios and rare performances from virtual J-pop star-cum-curated persona, Hatsune Miku. For the night owls among you, a peek at Berghain’s schedule will doubtless pay dividends. Hosting audiences throughout the week, the acts on offer are perhaps a little more varied than what one might come across on an average Sunday afternoon, with queer rap prodigy Le1f on the same main floor billing as Salon des Amateurs/Coméme mainstay Lena Willikens. That doesn’t go to say that more familiar names won’t be making appearances, with Friday’s closing party listing Gesloten Cirkel and Kassem Mosse on the roster.

Assuming your appetites are suitably whetted, head over to CTM to check out the full official schedule, as well as to procure tickets, or to Berghain to find out more about what will be going after nightfall.
