There was movement on the runway on the last morning of MBFWB as Michael Sontag presented his SS14 collection. No, I don’t mean the literal motion of Sontag’s fluid drapings and dresses, but rather the kind of movement that is evident in the garments when a designer pushes his work to evolve. His SS14 is worth noting for this reason. This season, Michael Sontag took the lead among Berlin’s established young designers to move from comfort while retaining his special blend of cerebral glam. With the Swarovski sponsorship in tow, Michael Sontag amped up the glamour for his SS14 collection, adding crystal details to his signature silk dresses, sandals, and yes, even jersey cotton shirts. The first look sent down the runway broke from Sontag’s usual monochromatic approach to silk dresses, sashes of bold colored silk elaborated his signature dress. We saw Sontag experiement with layering a variety of textures and combining casual jerseys with crystals and silk. With his SS14 collection, the designer was courting the Berlin woman—a woman more inclined to step out in a mixture of layers and volumes than a statement silk dress.
