Saturday saw the launch event of the Rad Hourani exhibition ‘5 years of unisex’ at Oukan in central Berlin. Marking a milestone anniversary for the unique brand, it was a celebration of unisex fashion and avant-garde design as a whole, being the first and only haute couture unisex designer in the market today. And despite his unconventional entry into the fashion world (having received no formal fashion education from an illustrious institution such as Central Saint Martins or the like), he has nevertheless carved out his own distinct niche, being the first designer in history to show a unisex haute couture collection at the 2012 July Paris fashion week. It was indeed this approach to his work which led him to be the first invited member by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris to design and show a unisex haute couture collection in January 2013. Saturday night’s event was a celebration of his Spring 2014 haute couture collection and an introduction of the brand into the German sphere and fashion consciousness, which is currently only being sold in Germany at Oukan.
The event, which was organized by Oukan in support of Blanc + Ençens, featured an appearance from the designer himself, showing his dedication to the expansion of his brand into the Berlin, and indeed German fashion market at large. Followed by an afterparty at Dean club in central Berlin, it was a true celebration of both Hourani’s philosophy and aesthetic; in the words of the designer himself “My designs are asexual, aseasonal. They come from no place, no time, no tradition, yet they could be home anywhere, anytime”.
